About:

I am a Professor of Computer Science, leader of the Intelligent Environments Group and a director of the interdisciplinary Digital Lifestyles Centre at Essex University in the UK. I established and directed mobile robotics research at Essex before founding a centre for intelligent environment research. Both areas now boast world-class teams and facilities such as the iSpace (a full size digital home), the iCampus (a Living Lab based on an instrumented campus) and iWorld (on online simulation of the Essex intelligent environments). I hold a B.Eng and PhD in Electronics and Computing, respectively, from Sheffield University. In general terms, my main expertise concerns technology for the creation of intelligent environments, which are everyday settings such as homes, offices, hotels, restaurants, shops, hospitals, classrooms, stage/studios, manufacturing environments, cars, trains, aircraft, boats, cities, public spaces and electronic clothing/fashion that are equipped with advanced networked computer based systems, which enable better or new lifestyles for people. More specifically, my recent work has been directed at developing intelligent educational environments, the immersive Internet, affective intelligent agents, quantum robotic controllers, end-user programming, and methods for ensuring stability of pervasive computing systems. I have authored over 200 papers in international journals, conferences and books (the more recent ones being listed below) . I have been principal investigator on numerous research projects attracting over 2 million pounds in funding and involving ongoing collaborations with researchers in many countries such as Germany, France, Greece, USA, China and Taiwan. I am a founder and principal organiser of the international annual IEEE sponsored conference, Intelligent Environments (being program chair for all but one of the years); current program of Creative Science 2012, and general chair of Intelligent Campus 2012; past program chair of Active Media Technology, Pervasive Computing and Applications, Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing; founder member of the Creative Science Foundation (and associated workshops) and a member of the editorial teams of the Intelligent Buildings International, Pervasive Computing & Communications, Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments journals and Editor of the ICST Transactipns of Future Intelligent Educational Environments.

A few historically interesting papers:

  1. Sharples S, Callaghan V, Clarke G, "A Multi-Agent Architecture For Intelligent Building Sensing and Control", Int'l Sensor Review Journal, Vol 19. No. 2., pp.135-140, May 1999. This is the oldest paper we can trace from the then newly formed Essex Intelligent Inhabited Environments Group. Its notable as its the first work we know of that proposed applying behaviour-based architecture to building control and pervasive computing. It identifies the basic set of behaviours needed that for the core set to this day.
  2. Callaghan V, Barker K, "SAS-an experimental tool for dynamic program structure acquisition and analysis", Journal of Microcomputer Applications (1982).5, .209-223. This paper described an experimental tool, SAS (Software Analysis System) which was been developed to enable dynamic program structure acquisition and analysis (profiling of the behaviour of computer processors and software) to be undertaken. The system uses a universal hardware extraction technique to obtain branch vectors plus some mathematical techniques for post processing the data to extract usage profiles and software complexity..

A paper describing the first use of computers to collect social science and market research data in the field using bespoke portable computers (an approach that predates the generations of handhelds that followed).
  4. Gwyn Rowley, Keith Barker, Victor Callaghan, (1986) "The Market Research Terminal & Developments in Survey Research", European Journal of Marketing, Vol. 20 Issue: 2, pp.35 - 39. A second paper that describes the first use of computers to collect social science and market research data.
  5. Frestone I, Callaghan V "A Portable Navigation Aid For The Blind". Published in 1984 based on an undergraduate project supervised by the authors. The name of the place this was published is lost (as is the name of the student). This was before the days of sat navs. The first attempt simply counted steps (using inertia from mercury). A later version of did a proper inertial navigation based on using meter movements to sense acceleration and then some double integration. All this system had error correction from waypoints built in. It was very crude compared to today's sat nave and wifi triangulation, but surprisingly effective.

    • If you live in Wivenhoe you might be interested to know that the "East Anglian Daily Times" (Thurs February 22nd 1996) reported that Wivenhoe was the first town in Europe and second town in the world to go onto the World Wide Web, beaten only by the town of Los Gatosn in California (see copy of article "European first for council enterprise"). Wivenhoe's presense on the web came about thanks to  a meeting between Councillor Cyril Liddy and Essex University's Prof Vic Callaghan (a then Wivenhoe resident). The two not only created the first website for Wivenhoe (which was hosted by Essex University) but embarked on a campaign to persuade local businesses that this would be an opportunity for them. One notable meeting was with the Coop where they pointed out that the Coop milk delivery service could double up as a home delivery for an online ordering service. Way back in those days that message was lost in disbelief that such a concept would ever come to fruition or be significant. In the same year (1996), Wivenhoe Town Council and Essex University established a working group (Councillor Cyril Liddy, Councillor Len Horner, Councillor Geoff Langsdon (Mayor), Prof Vic Callaghan, Dr Anthony Vickers) which created a facility, TACTIC in the ground floor of the Wivenhow Town Council offices that aimed to introduce residents to the Internet and show them what it could do for them (see the original web page - note the crude graphics of those times). The room housed 6 Internet connected to the Internet, plus a printer and was protected by iron bars on the windows (if you ever wondered what those iron bars were there for, now you know!). How times change with most homes owning their own PCs and business now fully onboard and supported by excellent web sites such as Peter Hill's WivenhoeFirst ! Of course, in those days, the internet was new and its future was unclear but, to the credit of Wivenhoe Town Council, they were one of the earliest govenrment pioneers of this new technology!
    • netCam - In 1993 a group of academics from Essex University had the idea to spin-off a company based on their tele-robotic vision research (Malcolm Lear, Martin Colley, Paul Chernett & Vic Callaghan). They had been working on a security robot that could act as a type of "night watchman" on duty in unmanned premises, such as supermarkets. The idea was that if an alarm was triggered, the first response would be sending a tele-operated robot to investigate, before people (police, company personnel etc) were summoned. There is a ‘YouTube’ video of the early (1993) prototype of this tele-operated robot.  The novelty of the work lay in the proprietary video coding scheme (that loaded the network much lighter than existing standards) and the network closed loop, but robust, control system. The team quickly realised that the most important part of the system was the network controlled camera, and they proposed that this part was separated and turned into a commercial product; a network camera called superVisor. You need to remember this work was taking place before the advent of webcams so, at this point of time, the idea of a standalone network camera was revolutionary and the world was sceptical about this (not least, about flooding computer networks with video data which, in those days, had a top capacity of around 10M bits - an order of magnitude less than many current home network connections!). It took about 4 years between first approaching the University with this idea and a company being set up; in between there were attempts by the University to licence the technology to existing companies before agreeing, eventually, to license the technology to the academics that invented the system, who then got a USA based business angel to fund the venture and incorporated the company on the 14th March 1997 (and formally received a signed licensing agreement from the University on the 1st October 1997). Despite the company having a global distributor (ClearView Communications), selling significant quantities of their systems to a global market including customers such as GCHQ in the UK, the Hoover Dam in the USA, a number of factors conspired to limit the company's success which eventually ceasing trading in 2010. Foremost in the problems were the delays in getting an agreement with the University, which allowed other competitors, such as Axis, to emerge. A second barrier was the conservatism and lack of computer skills in the security-camera market (at the time, all security cameras used wired video).  An article in The East Anglian Daily Times ("Security system gives us a view of the future") dated 3rd February 1999 gives an interesting insight to the then newly formed company together with the original sales brochure of the superVisor product.
